Types of Breast Implants

SALINE IMPLANTS

A saline breast implant consists of a silicone outer shell that is filled with sterile salt water after it is inserted into the body. Saline implants tend to feel firmer than natural breast tissue and may look more rotund than alternatives. With saline implants, patients have the ability to slightly adjust size after placement.  

SILICONE IMPLANTS

Silicone breast implants are made out of thick silicone gel encased in a silicone outer shell. Silicone gel mimics the qualities of your natural body fat, which makes these implants look and feel very lifelike. Silicone breast implants come in a variety of shapes and gel consistencies. 

GUMMY BEAR IMPLANTS

Gummy bear implants are made from a very dense silicone gel. Gummy bear breast implants are form-stable, meaning that, like a gummy bear, they will retain their shape even when cut in half. Gummy bear implants can be round or teardrop-shaped and tend to feel firmer than traditional silicone implants. 

Customizing Your Implants

Breast implants are mainly categorized by their primary material: saline or silicone. But there are several other qualities you can customize in your implants, such as shape and texture.

Breast Implant Placement

SUBMUSCULAR

With submuscular placement, implants are positioned under the pectoral muscle. There are several benefits to this technique, including a lower risk of capsular contracture and more natural-looking results. Patients can also obtain high-quality mammograms with implants placed behind the chest muscle. 

SUBGLANDULAR

With subglandular placement, the breast implants are positioned under the glandular, or breast, tissue. Subglandular placement may not be a suitable option for women with thin skin or little body fat due to the higher chance of visibility.

Patients of our Tijuana practice will consult with their doctor about the placement of their implants prior to their breast augmentation surgery.

Incision Approaches

INFRAMAMMARY INCISION

An inframammary incision is made in or near the breast’s natural crease. This incision is easily concealed by the overlying breast and is rarely visible during normal activities. The inframammary approach allows for the precise creation of the implant pocket and the cleanest entry for the implant. It is also associated with the lowest risk of capsular contracture and sensory changes to the nipple-areola complex.

PERIAREOLAR INCISION

With the periareolar technique, your plastic surgeon creates an incision around the outer perimeter of the areola (the darkly pigmented skin encircling the nipple). When performed successfully, the periareolar incision can be the least visible as it is concealed by the darker skin of the areola. It is the preferred type of incision for certain candidates, particularly if a mastopexy (breast lift) is needed. 

TRANSAXILLARY INCISION

The transaxillary technique involves a very small and well-hidden incision in the armpit. Your plastic surgeon will use an endoscope (a small lighted camera) to guide the implant through the incision into the breast pocket. While the technique is slightly risker than other approaches, it can work well with saline implants because they fit into a smaller incision and will be filled after placement. 

Candidates

FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION

Before you undergo breast augmentation, you will meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at our Tijuana practice. During your private consultation, we will assess your health and treatment goals to determine if implants are right for you. The best candidates meet the following criteria:

Reasonable Expectations

Patients should have a generally positive self-image and realistic expectations for the outcome of their breast augmentation.  Your goal should be to enhance your self-confidence, not necessarily to achieve a “perfect body.”

Good Overall Health

Patients need to be in good health to undergo breast augmentation surgery. Treatment is not recommended for those who smoke or have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for complications.

Are Not Breastfeeding

Women should wait at least 12 weeks after they have stopped breastfeeding before they undergo breast augmentation. Your results can be affected by the hormonal changes in your body as well as fluctuations in your weight.
