What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that removes loose skin and small amounts of fat in the abdominal area, making your midsection more flat and toned. If your abdominal muscles have weakened or separated, this procedure can restore them.
Removing excess skin is the primary benefit of the procedure. While some fat is removed, a liposuction treatment can remove a significant amount of fat. The plastic surgeons at our Tijuana, Mexico, facility can review your health and goals to see if you’re a good candidate for combined treatments.
You May Qualify for a Tummy Tuck If
Significant weight loss can improve your overall health but leave you with stretched skin. An abdominoplasty at our Tijuana, Mexico, facility can help enhance your appearance with bariatric surgery. Prior to your surgery, you should be close to or at your weight goal. If you still need to achieve additional weight loss outside of your tummy tuck, our plastic surgeons can review additional treatments with you.
YOU HAVE LOOSE SKIN
Significant weight loss and giving birth can leave you with loose, excess skin. Plastic surgery can remove loose skin, making your abdomen tighter and improving your frame.
YOU'RE DONE HAVING KIDS
A tummy tuck combined with liposuction is a common option in a mommy makeover for women after they’ve given birth. Abdominoplasty can renew your appearance after you’re finished having kids.
YOU MAINTAIN HEALTHY HABITS
To get the most out of plastic surgery, patients should not smoke or use tobacco products. Patients should also eat healthy, exercise regularly, and limit the amount of alcohol they drink.
YOU'RE IN GOOD HEALTH
Having good overall health cuts down the risk of complications during plastic surgery. Patients who have significant health issues may not recover as smoothly after their surgical procedure.
YOU UNDERSTAND THE PROCEDURE
Your plastic surgeon will explain all of the benefits and risks that come with a tummy tuck. This way, patients can see if the procedure is right for them and will help them achieve their health goals.
Types of Tummy Tucks
An Important Insurance Note
MINI TUMMY TUCK
In a mini tummy tuck, a three to five-inch incision is placed just under the bikini line. This is the least invasive option and requires the smallest incision. The skin is removed from the lower abdomen.
TRADITIONAL TUMMY TUCK
The length of the incision for a traditional tummy tuck can vary, sometimes extending from hip to hip. This allows our plastic surgeons to remove skin from the upper and lower abdomen.
EXTENDED TUMMY TUCK
This technique requires an incision across the entire abdomen and around the hips, allowing plastic surgeons to take loose skin from the upper and lower abdomen, the hips, back, and flank.
TUMMY TUCK WITH LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is included with the tummy tuck, removing excess fat.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure
A TIMELINE FOR AN ABDOMINOPLASTY TREATMENT IN TIJUANA, MEXICO
Your plastic surgeon will ask you about your goals and check your health history to make sure a tummy tuck is right for you. This meeting is also a time to discuss combining another treatment like liposuction.
On the day of your surgery, our plastic surgeon will mark your abdomen to show where incisions and lifting will happen.
You will be administered anesthesia to put you in a comfortable state. Generally, patients are administered general anesthesia, and have no recollection of the surgery.
A plastic surgeon will make a horizontal incision below the navel, from one hip toward the other. The length of the incision depends on the amount of lifting required.
The underlying muscle tissue is tightened while excess fat and skin tissue are removed. If needed, a new navel is created. The remaining skin is sutured and bandaged. The surgery can last from one to a few hours.
Patients rest in a recovery room and can usually go home the day of their surgery. The recovery process does come with restrictions and some discomfort, but patients say the temporary setbacks are worth it for the final results.
Steps to a Successful Recovery
Getting Plenty of Rest
Once you return home from surgery, it is important that you rest and take it easy for several days. Patients can expect to take about two weeks off from work immediately after their surgery.
Avoiding Strenuous Activity
Avoid exercise and activity that will raise your heart rate for at least six weeks after your surgery or until your plastic surgeon says it is OK.
Engage in Light Activity
While strenuous activity can increase your swelling, light activity like walking will keep your blood circulating.
Wearing Compression Garment
Patients will experience bruising and swelling following their surgery. A compression garment will help decrease the swelling.
Drains
If you combined your abdominoplasty with liposuction, you may have drains placed to remove excess fluid. Your drains have to be cleaned and emptied every day.

Side Effects
PAIN
To help minimize your pain during recovery, our doctors will prescribe oral pain medication. Be sure to follow the instructions of the medication to avoid any complications.
SWELLING
In addition to wearing a pressure garment, staying hydrated and eating a low-sodium diet will reduce your swelling.
PAIN
Bruising can last two to three weeks after your surgery. The colors of your bruises will start out red, and then turn purple or blue. As they heal, your bruises will turn green, then yellow or brown before they completely fade.
SWELLING
Patients may lose sensation in the area surrounding the treatment site, due to nerve damage. The numbness should reside as the nerves heal over time.
Making the Most of Your Results
Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly will help you retain the benefits of your surgery. We recommend protecting your scar from sunlight and using skin products to minimize it. Your scar can be easily hidden with clothing, preventing anyone from seeing it.
